Jordan
Why extend your
Holy Land Tour to Jordan?
First of all, Jordan is more than 50% of the land mass of the Land of Israel
during the reign of King Solomon. Second, the country is fascinating (wait
till you see Jerash and Petra)! Third, you are welcomed graciously and treated
wonderfully by the Jordanians.
Tuesday - transfer to Allenby Border Crossing into Jordan (requires advance visa). Meeting and assistance by our Jordanian representatives. Continue to Amman, afternoon at leisure, dinner and overnight.
Wednesday - drive to Jerash, the best-preserved city of Roman times outside Rome: visit theaters, temples, churches and colonnaded streets. Continue to Ajloun to tour the Saracen Castle. Dinner and overnight Amman.
Thursday - drive south
along the King's Highway to Petra; visiting Madaba once a Moabite border
city, cited in the Exodus account at Numbers 21:30 and Joshua 13:9. The
present-day city is known for the many mosaics found in the remains of floors
of private homes and public buildings. It is the site of the famed Madaba
Mosaic Map. The Madaba Mosaic Map is an index map of the region, dating
from the sixth century, preserved in the floor of the Greek Orthodox Basilica
of St. George. The mosaic is the earliest remaining representation of Jerusalem.
The map provides important details of 6th century landmarks. This map is
one key in developing scholarly knowledge about the physical layout of Jerusalem
after the year 70. Continue to Mt. Nebo - the burial site of Moses, then
drive through the magnificent scenery of Wadi Mujib to Kerak to visit the
Crusader Castle. Dinner and overnight Petra.
Friday - a full day to visit Petra, this city that was carved into the rose-red
Sharah Mountains by the Nabateans and lost to civilization until re-discovered
by the Swiss explorer Burkhardt. Walk through the Siq, a narrow and winding
fissure between the cliffs, to reach the: Treasury, Roman Theater, Courts,
Temple of the Winged Lion and other monuments. You may wish to climb up
to the Monastery. Dinner and overnight Petra.
Saturday - visit the Wadi Rum Desert (with a short ride in a 4x4 vehicle) and its awesome moon-like landscape, where the film Lawrence of Araba was shot. If time permits a short visit to Aqaba, Jordans only sea port city. Return to Amman on the Desert Highway (stop en route for optional lunch), dinner and overnight in Amman, (or cross into Israel at Aqaba for short flight to Tel Aviv - the 2 transfers and flight are not included in price, approx. $150).
Sunday - Transfer to Queen Alia International Airport for departure flight.
